Nano Chala is an exceptional expression of provenance from, the birthplace of coffee, Ethiopia. This year’s Nano Chala is characteristically Ethiopian in profile and presents sweet, refreshingly clean and syrupy in the cup.
Established in 2010 the Nano Chala Cooperative is the result of a collaboration with non-profit organisation, Technoserve. Technoserve, partially funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, aims to achieve better sustainable outcomes for farmers by the formation of new cooperatives supported from their inception by access to capital, education and routes to market.
In the case of the Nano Chala Cooperative, Technoserve assisted in the purchasing of a Penagos Eco Pulper (for wet processing) as well as establishing ‘Farm College.’ The educational programme is offered to smallholder farmers and assists in both agronomic and businesses practices which improve the quality of their coffees and, hence, market value.
Free of debt, Nano Chala have recently purchased a second depulper to facilitate their continued growth in both cooperative size and market demand.
